Our Community, Our Stories

I am more confident in my ability to mentor women who are from different areas of the College/University than me. I was very apprehensive when I saw that two of my mentees were from Academic divisions. We might have different day-to-day duties, but we were much more alike than we thought we would be.

I learn as much from my mentees as I hope they learned from me, so the learning is unique to each experience. In this case, I learned more about the structures and systems of State University system and was always challenges to consider new methods for engaging and challenging the mentees.

This experience has given me a space to intentionally reflect on my goals as a higher educational professional. I have been very grateful for this space and the ability to connect with others to share my feelings as a new professional.

I definitely feel more confident in my current role and I have more confidence in applying for a senior-level position. The group mentoring helped me see that I wasn’t the only one dealing with the problems I was dealing with. I found camaraderie among my group members and mentor. This helped me feel reassured that I was not alone. I haven’t applied for a higher position yet, but I have taken more of a lead role in my current position and have volunteered to lead subcommittees within my organization.

It was nice to get advice and perspective from someone outside of my institution. It helped me move forward from the place I was stuck. The group meetings made me realize/remember we all experience the same things at different institutions. We are not alone.
